Breathtaking Views

Sunset Campground is located at 692 West CR 232 Ruin Road, Blanding, Utah and is owned and managed by us, the Patterson family.  We have lived in Southeastern Utah for several generations.  As a ranching family, we have developed a strong bond with the land and the outdoors.  The parcel of land that the campground is on has been in our family ranching operation for over 44 years.  It is an honor to be the caretakers of this peaceful piece of land.

PEACEFUL

In the early settlement of Blanding, this parcel of land and the adjoining federal land was used as a trash dump, and for cattle and sheep grazing.  Eventually part of the federal grazing allotment was given to the Navajo tribe for houses.  Another part was given to expand the local collage, and we sold a part of our allotment to the Ute tribe.  This left the land were the campground is now, isolated from the rest of the ranch for years.    The trees grew a little and the sagebrush thrived and grew thick.  Some of the family and the nearby towns people continued to use this piece of land for a quiet peaceful place to go walking, find solitude and enjoy seeing a few deer and cottontails.

Then much of the sagebrush died and became a fire hazard. It was time to clean up the trash and the brush.  To our delight, underneath the brush and trash was a fair-sized Anasazi mound with several rooms and a Kiva.   Wanting to protect the Anasazi mound, and to share this special peaceful place with others; we built a Campground using as much as the natural vegetation as possible.  Eventfully we hope to add electricity and water to our campground.  But for now, we are satisfied to have a boon docking campground, where travelers can come to rest, enjoy a view of the Four Corners area, go hiking and on most evenings enjoy a beautiful sunset over the Bears Ears.
